Local winter birding hotspots

Birded

San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds--north pond

for the 1st time yesterday and it's fabulous, why didn't I know it sooner. Best place for studying Ducks. Some shorebirds, Turkey Vultures, and Gulls too, though Gulls aren't as diverse at Ballona/ Playa del Rey(for example no Heermann).

For warblers, Hahamongna is hard to beat; so many Townsends. Can still find Orange-crowned and Wilson.

Peck Rd. Conservation Park(Peck Pit) is a great place for beginners. Variety is terrific.
Not too many ducks though.  Where else you'll find Palm and Pine Warblers lol.
Probably the best place for Sparrows as well. Grasshopper, Swamp, Clay-Colored, Lark..you  name it.

And of course, due to its vast size

Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area is hard to beat. Vesper's Sparrows, Chestnut-collared Longspur, Burrowing Owl?, Loggerhead Shrike, American Pipits, Horned Larks, Waxwings...paradise. Best place for Geese too. Not many ducks and gulls though.

Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park is great as well. Some highlights are Cactus Wren, Bald Eagle, Great Horned Owl..this place is huge. Far better place for gulls and ducks than Santa Fe Dam as well.

Legg Lake is also a reliable place to watch Geese. Tri-colored Blackbirds are there.
