God it's so hot 4 geese at Almansor escaped and were sitting beneath a bench in the gazebo lol. In fact no ducks were at the lake, all were sitting in the shades, including Coots, a Wood duck(juvenile? Smooth but plain head and a faint white around the eye) and an American Wigeon(long time no see! This one). Canada Geese were as usual all over the place, with a Black-crowned Night-Heron among them right beside the gazebo. A Great Egret across the pond, a couple of Double-crested Cormorant sunning in the sun, and a herd of House Sparrows, that's about it.
Earlier at Peck Pit, couldn't find that mystery bird again, Lark Sparrow or Bunting(the tail was mostly black with white tip, but can't remember if I saw it on the back(uppertail) or on the front(undertail); Sibley illustrates Lark Bunting as having that color pattern UNDERtail(I see that NG does, too). Lark Sparrow, which I was first to spot it and post it on e bird a couple of months ago, has the opposite pattern; mostly white UNDERtail, but mostly white UPPERtail. Confusing.
But again spotted a solitary White-faced Ibis at the SE portion of the lake, and there were plenty of Peeps around, this time. Foraged with a couple of Kildeers. Problem is, my bino is not enough to identify it..again, confirmed the necessity of buying a scope, no regrets. Continuing Black-necked Stilts, and one Avocet(juvenile? overall white). And this time there were more gulls around, at least 5; before that there was only one on the rock of the the Midwest portion of the lake.
The weeds at the middle portion is now quite dry; and can't find an Orange Biship anymore, too bad. Near on the park, spotted a Flycatcher, but can't say which; Willow or Ash-throated; distinct brown colored crest on the head, overall brownish too methink, but it flew away quickly.
Anyway the heat-wave is just too much; I need to escape south; LA River around Willow St. tomorrow and Ballona on Sunday to bird with LA Audubon members. Will post today's pics later.
