Glad I opted for this instead of Cal. at USC. Spotting that many species compared to watching Karla Popovic? No competition? Haha.
Dessi was showing off his new bioncular, Bill kindly shared his car with Liz and me, chatted about Zheng He, and of course various birding episodes!
It was at first cold up there, but soon got warmer. Stopped at various places, including sideways of the roads lol. Bill said those miles posts are also used to locate bird spots but the leaders' knowledge was far too intricate..haha. He used a sound device to lure birds.
Where can I start, so many first finds, of course with the help of the veterans and their scopes lol. Especially prominent throughout were the various kinds of Sparrows, one of the most arcane arts of bird spotting! Chipping, Bell's?, Fox, Song?, Rufous-crowned, Savannah, Black chinned....man, should study Sibley lol.
Mountain Quail(didn't see, maybe others), Mt. Chickadee(those just couldn't stay still, constantly flitted about!), Red-breasted Nuthatch, White-headed woodpecker, Brown Creeper and Purple Finch(those two I don't think I spotted, too bad), White-headed Nutcracker(books says Clark's), Golden Eagle(just a speck lol, how could they recognize it, I marvel!), Golden Crowned Kinglet...
Considering that those places requires Adventure Pass to park($30 year), 6-7 hours well spent! Returned like almost 4pm to our parking cars lol(started around 7:30am!)
